The Painting Mistakes I Almost Made (And How You Can Avoid Them)

 

So, you've finally picked a colour. You feel like a genius. The hardest part is over, right? Aney, I thought so too.


I was so excited to paint my living room. I had my perfect shade of blue, I had my vision. But when I actually started, I realised I knew nothing. My head was filled with my own personal Interior wall paint FAQs, and I had no one to ask.


I made some mistakes. I almost made some big mistakes. I'm sharing my journey so you can learn from my cluelessness and find the best paint for interior walls without the drama.


My First Question: "Can I just use any paint I have lying around?"


I had a half-used can of paint from an outdoor project. My brain went, "Save money, lah!" and I was this close to using it inside. Luckily, a friend stopped me. He told me exterior paint is made tough to fight sun and rain, which means it has stronger chemicals you don't want to breathe in your bedroom. Lesson learned: Interior paint for inside, exterior paint for outside. They are not the same!


My Second Question: "Why can't I just paint the second coat now?"


I am not a patient person. After the first coat was on, it looked dry to me after about an hour. I was ready to go. I started painting the second coat and... it was a disaster. The first layer started getting sticky and smudging. It looked awful. I had to learn the hard way: you must wait. For most water-based interior paints, that's about 2-4 hours. Let the paint do its thing.


My Third Question: "What on earth is a 'finish'?"


I just wanted the best paint for interior walls, not a vocabulary test. The kind uncle at the shop explained it simply:


Matt: No shine. It looks very classy and is great at hiding the tiny imperfections on old walls.

Satin finishes provide just a touch of shine; they are also more easily wiped clean, making them ideal for such high traffic areas as hallways and kitchens.


For an elegant and contemporary finish, I chose a matt finish, and I love the way it looks.


My Final, Biggest Question: "Will the colour look the same on my wall?"


This was my biggest fear. We've all seen it, no? A beautiful beige on the little paper card turns into a sad, dull brown on the actual wall because of the room's lighting. I didn't want to risk it. My lifesaver was an online tool – the Dulux Visualizer app. It let me take a photo of my room and "test" the colour on the wall digitally. It took away all the guesswork.


After all that learning, my living room is finally done. And it looks amazing. It turns out, a beautiful paint job is about more than just a pretty colour. It's about knowing these little secrets.

Before you paint a thing, it’s smart to know how much paint you will actually need. Here's a simple way to calculate it:  Measure Your Walls Get a buddy and a metal tape measure. Measure the height and width of each wall; then, multiply them together to find the total square footage.  Subtract the Doors and Windows You can measure doors and windows with the same method and subtract that from the total wall space.  Account for Extra Paint After calculating, multiply the remaining square footage by the number of coats of paint (2 coats is usually recommended) and of course, don't forget to allowance a little extra for touch ups!
