Step by Step Dulux Paint Application Methodology for Perfect Walls

To paint your house beautifully, you'll need more than just colour. It requires good preparation and process, together with quality product. Dulux emulsion paint provides a smooth finish, protection, and colour for your interior and exterior walls that lasts. Follow the simple Dulux paint preparation and application steps below to ensure you get perfect walls that look beautiful for years. 

1. Interior - Prepare a New Surface


Firstly, you should complete all of the masonry work and allow the surface to cure completely, preferably for 28 days. The moisture content must be below 12% before painting. Clean the surface thoroughly from any dust and loose sand and all other contaminants. If cracks are visible up to 1mm, fill the cracks with Dulux Crack Filler, and allow to dry before proceeding.


2. Putty and Filler


Apply 1 to 2 coats of Dulux Putty to a thickness of 1 mm to help smooth the wall surface. Dry for 2–3 days depending on the weather, and then sand it out to achieve a good even finish. Dust off any, then apply Dulux Wall Filler to strengthen the surface. If the wall is powdery, apply Dulux Interior/Exterior Sealer before painting. Let the filler dry for 6–8 hours.


3. Application of Paint – Interior Walls


Apply one coat of Dulux emulsion coating as per the instructions on the container. Leave for 4–6 hrs to cure before applying a second coat of Dulux emulsion coating for good depth of colour. The paint formulation requires the full curing time (at least 7 days) to achieve its best performance and durability.


4. Interior Surfaces Previously Painted


Ensure the existing paint film is adhered and sound; if it is climbing or demonstrating other signs of deterioration, then it should be removed. Ensure surfaces are clean with a suitable detergent, and apply Dulux Aquatech Fungicidal Wash if there is evidence of fungi or algae. Any cracks should be replenished with Dulux Crack Filler, and if walls are powdery, a Dulux Sealer should be applied. Paint at least two coats of Dulux emulsion paint and allow adequate drying time between coats. 


5. Exterior Walls (New or Re-painted)


If painting exterior walls, ensure they are clean, cured, and free of moisture. If applying paint to exterior walls—Dulux Alkali Resistant Primer or Dulux Crack Bridging Wall Primer should be used. Then apply two coats of Dulux exterior emulsion paint allowing 4–6 hours curing time between coats. Finally, let it cure for 7 days to achieve the perfect weather-resistant finish.
