How to Paint a Room in Just One Day

Painting a room can feel like a big task, but with the right plan, you can get it done in a single day. Think of it like baking a cake—the secret is preparation! By the end of the day, with the right tools and Dulux paint, you’ll have a fresh, beautiful space to enjoy.

Step 1: Get Ready Before Painting

1. Clear the room

Move boxes, furniture, and clutter out of the way. Shift what you can’t move to the middle of the room and cover it with a dustsheet.

2. Pick your colour

Use the ICI Dulux Visualizer app to try out colours and see how they’ll look on your walls. You can also find your nearest paint shop through the app.

3. Find the right amount of paint

Unsure of how much you might need?  Use the ICI Dulux paint calculator - you simply enter the size of your room, and the app will tell you the amount of paint you need to buy.

4. Collect materials

Make sure you have clean brushes, rollers, paint trays, masking tape, and the paint you chose. Purchase new brushes and rollers if your old ones are in poor condition.

Step 2: The Day of the Paint

1. Preparation

Fill small cracks with putty, allow it to dry, and then you'll lightly sand the area. Wipe the dust off the walls with a damp/rung out cloth. Use masking tape on edge and anywhere you don’t want to have paint.

2. Start painting

To begin your paint job, you’ll “cut in” around the edges of the wall, use a small brush, and paint a thin border (about 1 inch) straight along the edge of the wall.

Use a roller to finish painting the remaining parts of the wall.

3. Relax

Enjoy your newfound free time: have a cup of chai as you wait for your walls to dry, while appreciating your hard work!

Quick Tip

If you only have time for one coat, load your roller well (but don’t soak it) and follow the paint dilution instructions on the tin for best results.
