How to Paint Your Bathroom in 10 Simple Steps

Colour is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to give your bathroom a fresh new look. Follow these simple steps to get the best results when using paint for bathroom walls, ceilings, or tiles.

1. Remove mould

Before you start, clean away any mould using a diluted bleach solution or a mould cleaner. Do this a day before painting so the surface can dry completely. Always wear gloves and eye protection when using chemicals.

2. Clear the room

Take out everything from the bathroom, including towel rails, toilet roll holders, and other fixtures. Keep screws and small parts in a sealed bag so you don’t lose them.

3. Prepare your surfaces

Scrape off any loose paint and fill cracks or holes with a water-resistant filler. Once dry, sand the surface smooth. Lightly sand any painted woodwork so the new paint sticks better. Vacuum away dust.

4. Clean your surfaces

Wash walls, tiles, and woodwork with sugar soap or a mild detergent to remove grease and dirt. Rinse with cold water to get rid of any residue. This helps the paint for bathroom surfaces to adhere well.

5. Protect your floor and fittings

Cover the floor, bath, and sink with dust sheets. Wrap taps and shower heads in small plastic bags. If you’re not painting tiles, use masking tape along their edges to avoid splashes.

6. Prepare your paint and tools

Choose a good-quality paint for bathroom areas, such as washable interior emulsion Supreme 3 in 1, which resists mould and moisture. For tiles, use Dulux tile paint for a durable, water-resistant finish. You’ll need a roller for large areas and a small brush for edges.

7. Paint the ceiling first

Start with the ceiling so any drips fall on unpainted walls. If you’re using different colours for the ceiling and walls, ‘cut in’ along the edges for a neat finish.

8. Paint the walls and/or tiles

Next, paint the walls. Overlap slightly onto the woodwork for a clean edge later. If painting tiles, apply Dulux tile paint to protect them from water and mould.

9. Paint the woodwork

Work from the middle of the room outwards to avoid touching wet paint. Paint the window frame, windowsill, skirting boards, and finally the doorframe.

10. Put everything back

Let the paint dry completely (check the paint can for drying times). Reattach fixtures, return your bathroom items, and enjoy your fresh, clean space.
